Guttering: Leather And Flexible Material Reinforcement And Heat Bonding

Guttering is the process of reinforcing leather or another material by applying a heat-adhesive interlining — known as gutta — to its reverse side, in order to reduce stretch, increase thickness and improve structural stability. This preparation step is essential in manufacturing leather goods, footwear and saddlery to guarantee the dimensional stability of cut parts before stitching and finishing.

Our Types Of Guttering Machines

To industrialise this operation while maintaining the quality of the application, we offer the MEPP series guttering machines — hot heat-bonding presses distributed and commissioned by Suteau-Anver.

MEPP guttering machines are the only machines to feature a patented pressing system known as the “Poumon” (Lung): pressure is not applied by a rigid platen — which cannot guarantee uniformity — but by a rubber membrane which, as it inflates, applies absolutely uniform pressure across every cm² of the working surface. This system delivers 5 times more effective pressing than rigid platen systems. Parameters are fully programmable: temperature up to 250°C, pressure from 0 to 1 400 g/cm², time from 0 to 120 seconds. Electronic control of both pressure and temperature guarantees reproducible leather finishing at every cycle.

MEPP guttering machines handle parts of varying shapes and thicknesses on the same platen simultaneously — making them particularly well suited to leather goods production, where cut parts are rarely uniform in thickness or geometry.

The Advantages Of Guttering Machines

Patented uniform pressure: the “Poumon” system guarantees consistent heat bonding across the entire surface, even when parts of different thicknesses are processed within the same cycle — a fundamental advantage over conventional rigid platen guttering machines.

Controlled leather finishing: the gutta interlining reinforces the material, improves structural hold and prepares parts for subsequent channeling, guide stitching and edge folding operations.

Fully controlled parameters: temperature, pressure and time are precisely adjustable to suit every type of leather or flexible material — from the finest nappa to the heaviest vegetable-tanned hide.

Versatility: a single machine handles complex shapes and variable thicknesses without any loss of bonding quality — the complete guttering and channeling solution for leather goods production.

As the exclusive French distributor of the MEPP guttering range, Suteau-Anver supports you from machine selection through to installation, operator training and after-sales service, with spare parts available in stock for immediate dispatch.
