Waterjet cutting: how does it work ?
Water is pressed through a nozzle with a pressure of 4 000 to 6 000 bars which results in enormouse speeds. The water exits 2 to 3 times the velocity of sound.
In order to cut hard materials an abrasive agent (garnet) is added to the water right after the nozzle.
What can we cut ?
The pure water jet cuts soft materials such as foam, rubber, gasket, etc. It’s also used in food industry.
Mixed with abrasive agent (garnet), the water jet cuts hard materials such as glass, metal, composites, etc.
What are the benefits ?
- The workpiece surface remains nearly cold (the cut is cooled by the water)
- A cutting thickness from 0.1 to 300 mm
- No noxious fumes
